Spoken Word: “the slam”
Another Unrecorded Rescue That Has Been Buried In My Brain
Slowly, but surely, I’m managing to put some my words out in a manner that I feel does them some justice. The story of “the slam” is identical to that of “advice” which I published last month, and I’m so excited to have this out in the open because I’ve always felt that it’s as much a showcase as it is an accurate depiction of what I experience when writing and performing in a competition setting.
To be sure, the points in a poetry slam don’t matter — they’ve never truly mattered — but what they do count for is encouraging performers to bring their best work up to the stage, hopefully work that the audience will find engaging and interesting.
Pride and prizes are nice, too.
That in itself has its disadvantages vis-à-vis the authenticity and courage of the pieces and the performers, which is one of the aspects I’m addressing in this piece.
I hope you enjoy it! Feel free to leave a score out of ten in the comments, or clap the equivalent ;)
