You both seem to be missing something fundamental here: Facebook isn't free. Each and every user is paying for the service with their content and their personal data. To follow your analogy, this is tantamount to that lovely building inviting you to use their benches on condition that you a) participate in the building's ongoing construction and b) leave your wallet with their personnelle while you're there.
