Unfortunately, the cost of not using libraries is needing to repeatedly reinvent the wheel, and it takes development focus off of the core value proposition.

Personally, I feel like compensating project maintainers and contributors would significantly increase project reliability - not only would they be more motivated to invest their time and efforts, but forking over cash to use a library is a fantastic incentive for most users to spend just a *little* bit of time evaluating them properly first.
