To me, the most disgusting thing is an entire industry relying on "engineers" who build and maintain the software that runs our entire planet but who don't require any kind of certification or license that can be revoked for malpractice. Not only does this not protect the world / employers from incompetence and malicious activity, but it also doesn't provide the right incentives to developers who, in the case of an employer trying to force them to take shortcuts, would be putting their careers on the line.
