That's what happens when people conflate consumerist and industrialist ideology with an economic system that basically lets everyone do whatever they want.

Capitalism is not the problem. (IMO) For a very long time we've been raising kids (school and media) to think that consumables are the only measure of value and money the only measure of success, and that altruism is for suckers. If you want to blame someone or something, maybe we could talk about the quality of our education and our societal values...
