That's distressing to hear, I'm fortunate to be living in South Africa where private healthcare is expensive, but relatively affordable. Regarding 401K matching though - surely you should just be putting in whatever you can afford? I'm not sure how that system works but I was under the impression that an employer matching your contributions is a bonus, not a requirement.
