Superb article. I took a "break" from working full time to return to academia and study something for pure enrichment, and the more I learned about history, philosophy and psychology the more despairing I became about what university educations have become, both from an institutional perspective and from a student / parent perspective.

It bothers me that so many people take out student loans that will haunt and hamper them as they begin their journey of self-discovery to find their place in the world, a handicap before they've even started in a world that's economically getting more and more difficult to navigate. It bothers me that so many people work so very hard for so very little satisfaction, and it bothers me that so many people are forced into giving up their childhoods and potential joy in adult life while the blue-collar workers that make the world go round become a scarce resource due to a ridiculous stigma that they're somehow not enough.

I only hope that we all grow up - along with our technology - to democratize knowledge and employment and radically alter the economic landscape in favor of actual humanity.

The Luddites weren't wrong.
