I worked under an awful director once (he'd come in from one of the big gaming houses), who tried to convince me that I needed to put in my 80 hours a week like the rest of the devs who were already burning out in spite of the weekly pizza they were being compensated with. I was very glad to be able to point to the explicit restriction on my Canadian work permit that forbade me from doing over 40, and even more grateful that I was one of the lucky few who could "get away with it".
It was disgusting. I ended up getting fired for complaining to his superiors that he was putting our workers and the entire operation in jeopardy. It took the company about three months to realize their mistake, that I'd been the only thing protecting the company from him, and they finally kicked him out... but it was sadly too late to prevent them from falling apart.
