The Original Works
Once upon a time — about 150 years ago — there was a little girl named Alice Liddell, who inspired a rather quirky math teacher named Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson to write a book about her adventures in Wonderland.
That book, along with its sequel (also inspired by an Alice, but a different Alice), has become a cultural touchstone for most of the generations since its publication, and has led to a wide variety of spin-offs, reboots and re-interpretations.
Regarding questions about the personal lives of the author and his inspirations, I prefer not to engage — here are a bunch of great articles on the subject, [1], [2], [3], and there are many more like them — and I must admit to personally being influenced and won over by the phenomenal work of art that is Bryan Talbot’s Alice in Sunderland, who brings the world of Lewis Carroll vividly and most exquisitely to life.
