As a long-time fan of the books, I'm curious: was it just the fifth book that put you off? In my experience the first four were phenomenal, the next four dragged (to be fair, if I recall correctly, the author was forced into extending the series by a greedy publisher), and the initial pace (and rush) resumed about halfway through the ninth.
